The Post-Graduate Work Permit Program (PGWP)

This program can be key to qualifying you for the many Provincial and Federal options available for permanent residency.

As of June 1, 2014, you automatically have authorization to work full-time after graduation, while awaiting a decision on your post-graduate work permit application.

Study permits will become invalid 90 days after completing your studies unless you hold a valid work permit or have authorization to remain in Canada.

The post-grad work permit increases Canada’s ability to retain international students’ skills, knowledge and experience for use in the Canadian economy. It also provides International Graduates with the opportunity to gain valuable Canadian experience and qualify for Immigration. You are not required to have a Canadian job offer at the time of application – allowing you to work for any Canadian employer in any industry.

To qualify you must graduate from a recognized institution in a recognized program that is eight months or longer. CIP Education Consulting services can advise on these matters as part of your study and Immigration strategy.

The PGWP issues work permits to foreign post-secondary students who wish to remain temporarily in Canada after graduation to work in any field of employment.

Work permits issued under the PGWP program can be valid for the length of the study program, up to a maximum of three years. It is important that the study program was a duration of at least eight months.

Basic Requirements:

  • have studied full-time in Canada on a program of study lasting at least eight months
  • have graduated from a recognized institution in a recognized program of study
  • have applied for a work permit within 90 days of completing and passing your academic studies
  • have a valid study permit at the time of application
