Every year more than 35 million people come to Canada as business visitors, tourists and students

Temporary Resident Visa

NEW  As of February 2014, all visitors will automatically qualify for a multiple-entry temporary resident visa valid for 10 years which will allow you to enter and depart Canada for six months at time.

By making the multiple-entry visa the standard visitor visa, we are evolving to meet the needs of international travellers who are looking for flexible, fast and convenient options to come to Canada.

Chris Alexander, Canada’s Citizenship and Immigration Minister

We expect the multiple-entry temporary resident visa to be popular with visitors from India, Mexico, Brazil, China and the Philippines.

If you and your family plan to visit Canada, depending on your nationality, a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) may be required to enter. Please note, not everyone needs a visa.

It’s important to remember that a visa doesn’t guarantee entry to Canada. A final determination is made by an immigration officer at your port of entry.

As a general rule you can’t work or study in Canada unless authorized to do so with a work or study permit.

To be approved for a TRV, you must:

  • have a valid travel document or passport
  • have a compelling reason for visiting Canada
  • have sufficient funds for your stay
  • satisfy the visa officer that you will leave Canada after your stay

 You may also need a:

  • medical exam
  • letter of invitation
