Factoring in the Parent and Grandparent Sponsorship processing times, which are likely to be over 24 months.

And you begin to see why it is critical that you submit a complete and decision-ready application without errors before the deadline.

The rest of this article will provide information on the steps in the process, what you need to do, and our top tips on how to submit a successful application.

What are the steps in the Parent and Grandparent Sponsorship process?

  • Expression of Interest
  • Lottery Draw
  • Get an Invitation to Apply
  • Prepare and Submit Sponsorship Evaluation Application
  • Prepare and Submit a Permanent Residency Application for each Family member; this step includes Medical, Criminal and Security checks
  • Wait for the 20 -24 month processing time

What are the Parent and Grandparent Sponsorship Requirements?

You will know the basic requirements if you have received an invitation to apply, but here they are again so you know what information you will have to gather;

Sponsor Eligibility:

  • Age and Status: Sponsors must be at least 18 years old and be either Canadian citizens or permanent residents.  Obviously, you also need to live in Canada.

  • Financial Eligibility: Sponsors must meet a minimum income threshold to demonstrate their ability to financially support their parents or grandparents without the need for social assistance, more on this later.

TIP: This is a major failure point for many applications as you must show you meet the LICO requirements each year over a three-year period.  You will need your Notices of Assessment and taxes up to date and meeting or exceeding the Low Income Cut Off (LICO).

  • Commitment: Sponsors must sign a Sponsorship Agreement with the Canadian Government, committing to providing financial support to the sponsored parents or grandparents for a 20-year period.  You also need a signed agreement between the sponsor and the applicant confirming an understanding of mutual obligations and responsibilities.

Sponsored Family Members Eligibility:

  • Relationship: To be eligible for sponsorship, the sponsored individuals must be biological or adoptive parents or grandparents of the sponsor.

 TIP: You better start going through your document draws now and ensure you have birth, marriage, and divorce certificates.  All documents must be translated into English or French, so get on to this early as translations take time.

  • Medical and Criminal  Admissibility Checks: Sponsored family members must undergo medical examinations and security and criminal background checks to determine admissibility to Canada.

TIP: It is best to be proactive if there are any health conditions that could be considered a danger to public health or pose excessive demands to Canada’s healthcare system that may make one Family member inadmissible, as this can make all the Family members inadmissible.

TIP: If there is any doubt on whether that DUI from 25 years ago counts, it is best to be proactive and have admissibility assessed.

What are the Parents and Grandparents Program Minimum Income Requirements?

Sponsorship of Parents and Grandparents Income Requirements:

  • Sponsor’s Financial Ability: The sponsor (the Canadian citizen or permanent resident) must meet a minimum income threshold to demonstrate their financial ability to support the sponsored parents or grandparents. This financial ability is intended to ensure that the sponsored family members will not require government assistance upon their arrival in Canada.
  • Minimum Income Calculation: The minimum income required is typically calculated based on the sponsor’s total family size, including the sponsor, their dependents, and the family members they intend to sponsor. The income must meet or exceed the LICO for the total family size.
  • Proof of Income: Sponsors must provide financial documents, such as a Notice of Assessment from the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA), to prove that they meet the income requirement.
  • Sponsorship Agreement: Sponsors must also sign a legally binding Sponsorship Agreement with the Canadian government, committing to providing financial support to their sponsored parents or grandparents for a specific duration.
  • Additional Requirements: In some cases, sponsors may also need to provide the co-signer’s income information if their income alone does not meet the minimum requirement. A co-signer is a person who is financially responsible for the sponsored family members along with the sponsor.

What Documentation and Forms do I need to Apply for a Parent and Grandparent Application?

At a minimum, the Sponsor and the Applicants will need the following IRCC forms to submit a complete application through their Permanent Residence Portal Account, and there may be others you need to provide, depending on our situation;

  • Application to Sponsor and Sponsorship Agreement and Undertaking (IMM 1344)
  • Financial Evaluation for parents and grandparents (IMM 5768)
  • Statutory Declaration of Common-law Union, if applicable (IMM 5409)
  • Generic Application Form for Canada (IMM 0008)
  • Schedule A – Background/Declaration (IMM 5669)
  • Additional Family Information (IMM 5406)
  • Supplementary Information-Your Travels IMM5662

The applicants will need to submit additional documents, including;

  • Medical Exams
  • Police Certificates
  • Biometrics
  • Details of Government, Military and Police service, if applicable.

The specific forms and documents may change, so it’s essential to refer to the latest application guide on the IRCC website.

What are the Parent and Grandparent IRCC Processing fees?

Sponsorship Fee: The sponsorship fee for the Parent and Grandparent Sponsorship program is;

  • Sponsorship Fee $75
  • principal applicant processing fee ($490)
  • and right of permanent residence fee ($515) each applicant
  • accompanying spouses are $565 each
  • dependant children are $155 each

So for an application containing x1 Granparent, you are looking at $1,080 CAD per application.

This fee is paid by the Canadian citizen or permanent resident who is sponsoring their parent or grandparent.

  • Biometrics Fee: If applicable, the sponsored parent or grandparent may also need to pay a biometrics fee of $85 CAD per person or $170 CAD for a family.

What are the Parent and Grandparent Processing times?

Processing times for parent and grandparent sponsorships can vary. The demand for this program is often high, and the number of applications received can exceed the quota set by the government. Be prepared for potentially lengthy processing times.

Other factors affecting processing times include your application’s completeness.

Current processing times are 20-24 months, but these are subject to change.

To get the most current processing times, I recommend checking the official Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) website.

Miho and her team were key to getting my wife’s Permanent Residence as quickly and smoothly as we did. She helped us through several unique challenges, both before we left Japan to move back to Vancouver, and after. All the while Miho made us feel safe and supported. The value for money is something I wondered about at first, but I was genuinely impressed with just how much Miho helped us simplify the process. Despite some delays with the immigration processing center that were outside of our control, Miho was instrumental in assisting us get my wife’s PR ahead of the estimated timeframe. Miho came highly recommended to us, and my wife and I would highly recommend CIP anyone looking for immigration assistance.

Immigration was a long journey for me but I couldn't imagine how it would have been without the help of Matthew, Stephanie and Miho. They were the only consultants to have found me a temporary visa to solve my current issues so I could go back to work in Canada while applying for my PR. With the delays of COVID, they were very helpful and it was a huge peace of mind for me. I would definitely recommend them and use their help again in the future if needed.

My Husband's brother referred us to Miho to help me with my P.R application. Doing this without a person who knows and understands the process is extremely difficult. Miho explained to me what I needed to do and what to expect. Miho guided me double checked, kept me informed of what was going on with my file and was always there to answer my questions. Miho's right hand Stephanie was extremely thorough and always available. I thank and applaud both of you for your outstanding work, I am now a P.R of Canada.
