About Canada

Canada is the second largest country in the world with the world’s 36th largest population, weighing in at 33 million.  It is a land of pristine lakes, mountains and unsurpassed natural beauty.  Canadians are proud of their multi ethnic origins. Canadian society embodies liberal democratic values and a market driven economy.  Canada is renowned for its high standard of living, world class educational institutions, universal medical care and solid banking system.

Canada is consistently ranked the best place in the world to live by the UN, based on the health and longevity of its citizens and their high levels of education.  Many immigrants settle in Toronto, Vancouver or Montreal, with increasing numbers choosing to settle in Calgary, Edmonton and Saskatoon. Canada was built by immigrants and offers great opportunity to newcomers.

Demographics

Canada’s immigrant population is growing.   According to government records between 2001 and 2006, Canada's foreign-born population increased by over 13% and is set to continue to increase because of the high quality of life, low population density and robust economy.  Statistics Canada report that there are over 6 million foreign born people now living in Canada and that over 1 million immigrants have moved to Canada since 2001.

Government

Canada’s government is a Constitutional monarchy headed by the Queen of England. The democratic Parliament consists of an elected House of Commons and an appointed Senate.  The House and Senate form a centralized federal government lead by the Prime Minister. Strong autonomous provincial and territorial parliaments represent the regions. The party political system consists of the Conservative Party, the Liberal Party, the New Democratic Party (NDP), and the Bloc Québécois.

Economy

Canada is a member of G8 and the North American Free Trade Agreement making it a great place to do business.  Canada’s free market economy is less regulated than most European countries.

Canada’s biggest trading partner is the US, though increasing trade to Pacific Rim countries is becoming more important.  Canada’s most important primary industrials are logging, oil and gas, all of which provide opportunities for skilled workers. The service industry also plays an important role in the economy and is a major source of employment.  Canada has broad access to the entire North American market of nearly half a billion people.
